Detailed information of Day Trip to Bagamoyo Historical Tour

The morning after breakfast from your hotel at 08:30 am We will take you from your hotel or your residence and drive 75 kilometers north of Dar es Salaam. The trip will take almost 1.5 hours, it will depend on traffic conditions.

We will arrive in the historic town of Bagamoyo at 10:00 hours Bagamoyo. Established in the late 18th century, Bagamoyo has a rich and exceptional history, having once served as a major Arab trading port and finally as the capital of East German Africa.

Your tour will Start with a visit to the Kaole Ruins, located about 3 kilometers from Bagamoyo town. This historical site features residue of early Arab settlements, involving a 13th-century mosque, which is referred to as one of the ancient in Tanzania, and a later mosque from the 15th century. The ruins also involve several ancient graves, a cemetery, and a small museum showing various artifacts.

 Explore and learn about the ruins with your guide, who will give you insights into the history of these historical sites, involving the use of coral stones in the construction of their building. After visiting the museum, take a walk to the impressive iconic baobab tree nearby.

Then We will head to the Old Fort, a famous historical structure in Bagamoyo. Built in 1860, this fort has served diverse purposes, including as a provision house, a slave holding facility, and a military camp area during colonial times.

On the way back to Bagamoyo, we will stop at the Crocodile Ranch, where you can spot and learn about these reptiles, which are kept for show and sale. Then we will go to the Slave Market, which is a small museum displaying Bagamoyo’s history related to the slave and ivory trades. The museum has old photographs, documents, and residue marking Bagamoyo as the important remaining for Nyamwezi caravans.

Then we will go to the Catholic Mission, one of the ancient Catholic institutions in East Africa.  It was established in the late 1800s to enhance children freed from slavery, the mission later changed into a church and school. The area involves the main church, a stone memorial tower dedicated to explorer David Livingstone, a mission cemetery, and various buildings utilized by missionaries.

Visit the Caravan Serai Historical Museum, which exhibits Bagamoyo’s history and culture, normally focusing on the slave trade.

Explore Stone Town (Mji Mkongwe), where buildings were designed in the German era, such as the old German Boma (colonial administrative offices), Liku House, and Post Office, are still visible. Also, you will visit the beach to watch the local fish market and the residue of the German Customs House (1895) and Old Bagamoyo’s port. If time allows you will observe the vibrant fish auctions on the beach.

At 13:00 you will Enjoy a delicious lunch and some relaxation at one of the town resorts. Spend the afternoon enjoying the resort facilities, beach, and ocean.

 

At 16:00 we will start heading back to Dar es Salaam and here will mark the end of the Bagamoyo Cultural and Historical tour.
